Louis Brandeis (b. November 13, 1856, Louisville, Kentucky – d. October 5, 1941, Washington D.C.) was an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, serving from 1916 until 1939. Brandeis was the Court’s 67th justice and its first Jewish-American justice. He was the son of immigrants from Bohemia, who came to Kentucky from Prague, then part of the Austrian Empire. Charles Edward Clark was born in Woodbridge, Connecticut on December 9, 1889, the son of Samuel Orman and Pauline C. Marquand Clark. He graduated from Yale College in 1911 and Yale Law School in 1913; in the same year he was admitted to the Connecticut bar. In 1919, after six years of private practice in New Haven, Clark was appointed to the faculty of the Yale Law School as assistant professor.
